FAQ

GENERAL FAQ

Where are you located?

King of the Hill is a private tattoo studio and has recently relocated to Emerald Beach. Our new address is 64 Fiddaman Road, Emerald Beach.

Emerald Beach is less than a 20 minute drive north of Coffs Harbour on the Mid-North Coast of NSW. Emerald Beach is a seaside village; a cafe, general store, restaurant and beautiful beach are all within a short walking distance of the studio.

What is a private tattoo studio?

A private studio is a tattoo studio that is not open for the general public to walk into without an appointment.

This also means that artists at the studio do not offer “walk ins”. We all handle our own bookings and are not able to answer enquiries on each other’s behalf.

King of the Hill does not have a studio phone line. If you wish to contact us please send an email to kingofthehilltattoostudio@gmail.com for general enquiries.

When should I arrive?

Please arrive on time for your appointment or up to 5-10 minutes early.

It is best if you don’t arrive more than 10 minutes before your appointment to minimise parking congestion in the area, and as your artist may still be with earlier clients or setting up for your appointment.

Is there parking at the studio?

There is limited all-day street side parking at the studio.

If the front gate is open you are welcome to park inside the gate if there is enough room for your car. Please leave enough room for the gate to be closed behind.

If you are parking on the street please take care not to block any neighbour’s driveways.

It’s fantastic if you can arrange a lift to and from the studio.

How painful will my tattoo be?

It may be painful. How much so depends on the placement, size, and style (colour vs dot shading).

I like comparing the sensation of being tattooed to scratching sunburn. It isn’t pleasant but how painful it actually is varies person to person.

Everyone responds to pain differently and one person may find an area really painful that you find relatively painless and vice versa.

Generally people find placements with more nerve endings (such as hands) and bony areas more painful.

Can I use local anaesthetic for my tattoo?

Yes you can. It is important to use it correctly and you must supply and apply it yourself. Please let your artist know if you want to use it for your appointment!

Local anaesthetic creams are available in pharmacies in Australia.

When used for tattoos you need to apply a thick layer of the cream and wrap it with cling wrap at least 1-2hrs before your appointment.

We recommend doing a spot test (in a spot you aren’t getting tattooed) prior to your appointment date to ensure you don’t experience any skin reactions (swelling or rashes). Your artist won’t be able to tattoo you if you use a cream and you’ve had a skin reaction to it!

Local anaesthetic creams are usually only effective for a couple of hours. This means the cream will likely wear off during the tattoo if you are getting a large piece. If you are considering using anaesthetic for larger piece you’ll need to let your artist know so they can plan your appointment accordingly.

Can I bring friends or family with me to my appointment?

Given our studio’s private setup, maintaining a limited number of people on the premises is essential to our business. We kindly request that only those getting tattooed are present during the session.

If you have someone with you, we recommend they go visit the local cafe EB General (seriously good burgers) and relax at the lovely nearby beach while they wait!

Carers are welcome and are an exception to this policy. To have a carer sit with you while you are getting tattooed they will need to complete a consent form for our insurance.

Can I bring my children with me?

Please be aware that you cannot bring children (of any age) with you into the studio, and this includes the reception area and the front yard.

The studio is setup as a private studio and does not have areas partitioned off to keep children from wandering into them. There are also no staff to supervise your children and their safety cannot be guaranteed, and therefore we cannot have clients bring children to the studio to wait while they are being tattooed.

Can I use my phone or similar device during my tattoo?

You can depending on where you are getting tattooed and whether you are able to sit still while using your device!

I recommend bringing headphones, then you can listen to music or an audiobook without having to hold your device (which works great for most placements!).

Do you tattoo under 18’s?

We do not tattoo anyone under the age of 18 years under any circumstances, regardless of parental consent.

This is not negotiable!

If you are under 18 years old you will have to wait until your 18th birthday until we will tattoo you. You are welcome to book ahead for your 18th birthday, and this has been arranged for clients in the past. Please reach out to your artist to arrange this. Remember we will require original photo ID (Driver’s license, proof of age card or passport) on the day of your appointment, so ensure you have this organised ahead of time if you don’t currently have one of those forms of ID already.

BOOKINGS, QUOTES AND PAYMENTS METHODS

Do you do quotes?

Each of our artists do their own quotes. Please reach out to your chosen artist to discuss quotes.

Please keep in mind that all quotes are approximate, and based off how long your artist expects the tattoo will take to complete. A quote may be given in a range ($200-300 for example) due to potential design and size changes on the day, and each client and their skin being different. Any quotes provided by one of our artists is for that artist only.

For “full sleeves” and similar large scale work, accurate quotes are uncommon as these can be detailed and take several months to complete. Our artists usually charge these using their hourly rate. For current hourly rates it is best to contact your artist directly.

How do I book an appointment?

Each of our tattoo artists at King of the Hill do their own bookings and have their preferred contact method for this. Our Artists page has details of the best way to book with each of them. It is also summarised below.

Rob Domberelli: email kingofthehilltattoostudio@gmail.com

Nathan Puata: email nattatu@me.com

Bron Plumbe: at www.beautifuldeadthing.com.au (direct link to form here)

Megan Carr: email megsy129@hotmail.com

Will I require a deposit?

A non-refundable (usually $100) deposit is required for tattoo bookings. Your booking is not confirmed until your artist has received a deposit.

Your deposit is deducted from the total price due on the day (example: $300 tattoo – $100 deposit = $200 balance due). If you need to reschedule your appointment you will need to notify your artist at least 24hrs in advance or your deposit may be forfeited (this is up to your artist’s discretion). If your deposit is forfeited, a new deposit will then be required to reschedule. If you cancel your appointment with no intention of ever re-booking your deposit will not be refunded. Deposits will be held for up to 6 months, if you have not rebooked your tattoo within this time-frame your deposit will be forfeited.

If you use a gift voucher as a deposit, $100 will be deducted from the gift voucher balance and our deposit policy still applies.

No-showing will result in the loss of your deposit. You will require a new deposit to re-book your appointment. Repeated no-shows may result in future refusal of service.

What payment methods do you accept?

Cash is preferred, but bank transfer is also accepted by some of our artists (Rob and Bron). If needed there’s an ATM at the bottle shop which is close by or at the service station down the road. Please note, we don’t currently have Eftpos facilities available.

King of the Hill does not offer Afterpay or similar services.

Do you sell gift vouchers?

Gift vouchers are available for purchase. To purchase a gift voucher please contact Rob via email at kingofthehilltattoostudio@gmail.com

TATTOO DESIGN FAQ

Do the artists at King of the Hill do custom designs?

Yes we do! Most of the work our artists do are custom designs. The artists at King of the Hill studio value bringing their clients custom ideas to life. Please reach out to the artist whose previous work and style you are drawn towards to discuss a custom tattoo.

Can I get an artist to draw me something without booking in and paying a deposit?

Please understand we are not able to do this for you. Drawing up custom designs can take hours and artists are not generally willing to do this without a confirmed booking with a deposit.

Can I see the design before my appointment?

Not usually. Many artists don’t draw custom designs until a day or two before appointments (for some artists it’s even the night or morning before!)

Your artist may suggest a follow-up consult appointment for large and/or complex pieces.

Otherwise, it’s ok if we’ve got to do some changes on the day to tweak the design!

Unfortunately, there is a risk that a client will take a custom design an artist has drawn especially for them to a different artist (because they’ll do it cheaper for example). Not sending out designs prior to appointments helps protect tattoo artists from having this unpleasant situation happening to them!

Can I get an exact design I saw elsewhere?

This will depend on the design. Our artists pride themselves in creating unique pieces for clients. If you find a picture you really like your artist can use it as a starting point to create something for you by putting their own spin and style into the design.
